American History Homework One
Instructor: Andy Schlafly

Read the lecture, and then reread it if that is helpful.

For written assignments, this course has two tracks: Honors and regular. The Honors track is for those who want to excel on a College Board exam, or are very interested in history and want to learn more about it. Students can try the Honors track and then drop back to the regular track later if they like, so there is no harm in attempting the Honors track.

Most questions can be answered easily by using the lecture, but a little outside research may help, since every source has a different viewpoint and details. Use outside sources as much as possible! Use www.conservapedia.com if you want to look up any terms you do not understand.

These questions require at most one or a few phrases to answer; you do not need to write complete sentences.

The preferred way to submit your answers by posting them online at: http://www.conservapedia.com/American_History_Homework_One_Answers
Your homework will be graded more quickly, and the feedback will be better, if you use the website. If submitted online, your answers will be considered for the weekly model answers. But you can also hand in your written homework for grading.

1. List the European nations that settled in the New World from 1450-1650, in chronological order.

2. What inspires you the most about Christopher Columbus?

3. Why do you think were some reasons why some early settlements might have failed?

4. What was the motivation for the first settlement in the Massachusetts area?

5. Explain how William Penn was remarkable.

6. Compare and contrast the Puritans and the Pilgrims.

7. What were the four types of colonies, and (if possible) give an example of each.

8. Briefly answer (in a few sentences) any of the debate or discussion topics from the lecture.
