In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt sent the Great White Fleet on a voyage across the world. The fleet consisted of sixteen new battleships, all painted white. The voyage took 14 months, from December 16, 1907 to February 22, 1909.
The main reason for the voyage was to show the strength of the United States Navy to the Japanese and Chinese. This happened during a time of tension in the Pacific between Japan and the United States.
