-The '''Burr conspiracy''' was an expedition of [[Aaron Burr]], the infamous [[vice president]] under [[Thomas Jefferson]]. His goal was ultimately to separate the western states from the Atlantic states. General James Wilkinson, had a personal interest in this military expedition in the West. He secretly turned on Burr, however, after Burr sent him a coded letter outlining his plans. In the coded letter, Burr explained that he had garnered support from some old cronies and had made a hideaway on Blennerhassett Island. Wilkinson decoded the letter and forwarded it to President Jefferson. Meanwhile, Burr intended to begin the conflict at [[Baton Rouge]]. It would have benefited himself and many other officials if his plot to divide the country had worked.
