Gilbert Charles Stuart (Saunderstown, Rhode Island, 1755 – Boston, 1828) was an American painter. He painted portraits of over 1000 people. They included Presidents Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe as well as war heroes and many other socially prominent men and women. [1]
Stuart is known for his portraits of some of the most famous men and women of his era in America; his sitters were politically prominent and wealthy, from the merchant and landed classes. [2] National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
