When "wizards" are referred to in Lev. it is not the pointy-hatted, harry potter thing. It is people claiming to use magics and invoking pagan gods to perform "miracles". It is a way to protect the Isrealites from getting 1) sucked into paganism, and 2) ripped off by snake-oil salesmen.
