Durham County Council is a unitary authority covering an area of north-eastern England. Despite containing "Durham County" in its name, Durham County Council not only excludes many of County Durham's most populous areas, such as Gateshead and Sunderland in the north east of the county, it also contains areas of northern Yorkshire.
