Joke sports are games that are poor substitutes for athletic endeavors that bring out the best in human achievement with a underlying purpose to the event. The inclusion of many joke sports in the 2012 Summer Olympics detracts from the serious events.
Examples of joke sports include:
- Badminton
- Beach Volleyball
- BMX Cycling
- Dressage
- Rhythmic Gymnastics
- Synchronized Swimming
- Swimming relays[1]
- Backstroke races[2]
- Swimming medleys[3]
- Table Tennis
- Taekwondo
- Women's Boxing and Wrestling
Comments
- ↑ In running relays, there is a baton that must be artfully passed during the race. No such baton passing exists for the silly swimming relays. Would anyone want a long jump or pole vault "relay"???
- ↑ An inefficient, silly stroke comparable to foot races for hopping or running backwards.
- ↑ It is hard even to imagine how preposterous a land-based equivalent of this might look. Yet swimmers award and receive gold medals for them without raising a single eyebrow.
