Chester-le-Street

Chester-le-Street is a market town in County Durham, England. It is located on the western banks of the River Wear, approximately 6 miles north of Durham city and 9 miles south of Newcastle upon Tyne. The town has a population of approximately 24,000.

The town has a history dating back to the Roman era. It corresponds to the 1st century Roman fort Concangis. During the Anglo-Saxon era, the settlement was known as Cuncacestre (which was revived for the name of a Catholic titular see). The Norman-era church of St Mary and St Cuthbert stands on the church erected in the 7th century to house the remains of Saint Cuthbert. It was the seat of the Anglo-Saxon Bishop of Lindisfarne. In the 21st century, it is perhaps best known for the Riverside Ground, which is home to Durham County Cricket Club.
