Small market town on the banks of the [[River Tweed]], [[Berwickshire]], [[Scotland]]. Coldstream is famous as the location from which General Monck's Regiment of Foot marched on London in late 1659 on a mission which would lead to the overthrow of the [[Commonwealth]] established by [[Oliver Cromwell]] and the restoration of the British monarchy under [[Charles II]. Monck's regiment was coinsequently renamed the [[Coldstream Guards]] and has the longest continuous history of any regiment in the [[British Army]]. The name derives from 'cauld stream', referring to the caulds (or weirs) on the Tweed and the smaller River Leet which enters the Tweed by the town. The making of sperm whale candles was a major industry in the town before the coming of electricity, and a whale's jawbone formes the entrance arch to the parish kirk.
