In December 2019, Pompeo, along with Secretary of Defense [[Mark Esper]] and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff [[Mark Milley]] acted on their own authority to respond to alleged Iranian proxy attacks on Iraqi military bases hosting American troops.
