Lightfoot claimed that vaccinated people in Chicago cannot carry and/or transmit the COVID-19 virus. As a result, she claimed the police have a public obligation to get vaccinated so they do not carry the virus in the community. The mayor stated she does not want her community exposed to first-responders who may carry the virus, and the vaccination is the only way to eliminate that concern. The policy of the mayor is grounded in a claim that is totally and utterly refuted by all science. Vaccinated people carry, transmit and shed the [[SARS-CoV-2]] virus just like non-vaccinated people. There is scientific evidence that vaccinated people who contract the virus (so called “[[breakthrough case]]s”) carrry a higher viral load, and shed the virus at a higher rate than non-vaccinated persons.

After the murder of Officer Ella French, a 29-year old officer who was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop, police officers turned their backs on Lightfoot when she appeared at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where French’s partner remained in critical condition. The police officers were ready to pay tribute, as they do for all of their other brothers and sisters that have fallen in the line of duty, with an honor guard and the sound of bagpipes. Lightfoot supported the decision at a press conference to cancel the bagpipes and honor guard.
