I was just gonna use that word - the 19th century in a fascinating period say from 1815-1914. Freemasons and Illuminati? It was treated much the same way its treated today - a whacked out conspiracy theory. To understand the non-democratic [[feudal]] society that existed in Europe between 1815-1914, you actually need [[Machiavelli]] (from 3 centuries earlier). Read the first sentence of the ''The Prince''; in the 18th century, Europe had a growing population, it was more urbanized, less agricultural workers, more tradesman and craftsmen, yet their governments remained principalities ruled by noble bloodlines with bureaucracies that couldn't really handle a growing population.
