The Russians and "El Hadj" make strange bed fellows.

One of the more "efficient" leaders of the El Fatah terrorist organization is a tall, slender man who calls himself "El Hadj" — "pilgrim" in English. "El Hadj" heads a group of "specialists" trained to assemble bombs which in turn are smuggled into crowded civilian areas of Old Jerusalem.
In all likelihood, the recent terrorist attack, which cost scores of lives (most of them women and children) are the work of this man.
"El Hadj" is a master of disguise. He crosses the border — sometimes in Arab garbs, but more often dressed like a European. He also sports a forged Swiss passport. In his European clothes he does not look one bit like an Arab, and for this reason he was able to cross practically at will until his identity became known.
There is a good reason why "El Hadj" is able to pass as a European. He is none other than Richard Winterhalter, formerly of the SS death head squad. Winterhalter, wanted by West Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia for war crimes, operated both in T e r e z i n (Theresienstadt) and Auschwitz.
Winterhalter was the key man who arranged for the death trains bringing elderly people from Terezin to the Birkenau extermination factories. He has also trained the "S p e c i a l Commandos" of Auschwitz prisoners temporarily reprieved for their gruesome task of bringing the bodies of murder victims from the gas chambers to the crematoria.
Winterhalter escaped from a British prisoner-of-war camp during summer 1945 and crossed into Italy where he was hidden in a North Italian Monastery.
From there, he made it to Egypt where ho converted to Islam. During 1949, he made his pilgrimage to Mecca which enabled him to call himself "El Hadj".
The newly created Mohammedan promptly joined the battle against Israel and served under the Notorious Mufti of Jerusalem.
Later he was taken over by the so-calted "Palestine Liberation Organization" and today he is the specialist charged with providing the El Fatah terrorists with Nazi "know how".
The case of Winterhalter is only one of several similar cases where former Nazi war criminals have been deliberately enlisted to organize anti-Israeli terrorism. The tragi-comic part about all this is the close liaison between Soviet specialists and Winterhaller's organization. The very country which was a mortal enemy of Nazism during World War II, which still claims to be opposed to Nazism and Fascism today, enables one of the worst surviving war criminals not only to live in freedom but to perpetuate his crimes.
The Winterhalter case should cause Soviet officials to investigate whether their help and assistance does not sometimes reach the wrong people.
This reporter would like to believe, that the Soviet government, with all its faults, could not possibly be interested to see this happen.
Next to the Jewish people, who lost one third of its number in the Holocaust, the Soviet people suffered most under Nazi rule.
Have the victims of the "Eisatztruppen" in the Soviet Union been completely forgotten? It is my personal hope that the case of "El Hadj", alias Richard Winterhalter, will cause the Soviet government to revise some of their Mid-Eastern policies.
Perhaps even some of the more intelligent Arabs might ask themselves this question: Could an anti-Semitic criminal like Winterhalter serve the cause of the Arab people who, after all, happen to be Semites too?</small></blockquote></ref>
