:Maybe reciprocal tariffs involves some short-term pain to get long-term benefits. The Chinese have a very low birthrate so the USA has to make a transition over time as far as counting on the Chinese to manufacture things. Next, there is a danger of Trump using a tariff sledgehammer against China and there not being enough manufacturing capacity to replace them should their economy be badly damaged. China already has big economic problems so taking more pieces out of their Jenga economy could have some unintended consequences that are deleterious to the USA.
