After allowing 9 days of political protests by monks and others, the Burmese government told marchers to disperse. Violence ensued, and it's not clear whether 1 or 4 civilians died - or whether police "opened fire" on marchers or responded to provocation.
One report has police firing over the heads of people. Another report has a civilian to wrestle a rifle away from a policeman. And two police motorcycles were burned.
The question most interesting to Westerners is whether the civilian violence came first, or was a response to police violence.

Contrary to the American tradition, in East Asia protests often involve deliberately staged clashes between protesters and riot police. Western news media often omit this aspect and downplay the strategy of protesters, in order to imply falsely that a peaceful protest was suddenly and inexplicably turned into an atrocious violation of human rights. Liberals like to pretend that countries friendly to the [[United States]] are more anti-democratic than they really are.
