The '''Montagnards''' were a faction of the [[Jacobins]] in the [[Convention]]. They were named the Montagnards (the Mountain) because they sat on the upper benches of the Assembly. There were approximately 300 Montagnard deputies, including [[Maximilien de Robespierre]], [[Georges Danton]] and [[Jean Paul Marat]]. They became the dominant faction in the Convention after the overthrow of [[Girondins]] on 2 June 1793.
