Set on [[Prince Edward Island]], [[Canada]], it is the tale of Anne Shirley, an orphan girl sent in error for adoption to an elderly brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had wanted a boy to help on their farm, Green Gables. Anne's life on PEI, as she grew to adulthood, is chronicled in a number of sequels written between 1909 and 1939.
