It should be noted, Joe McCarthy made his Wheeling, West Virginia speech in February 1950, the North Koreans crossed the 38 parallel in June 1950, and Pepper was unseated in November 1950. Also, the Soviets exploded their atomic bomb in 1949 and Mao declared the PRC the same year. In 1948 was the Berlin Airlift. So Pepper is inextricably linked to McCarthy's hunt for communists in government, given that his staff were sending detailed reports and designs from the War Production Board during WWII.

A simple unreported fact of history is, of the 16 million servicemen of "The Greatest Generation" who defeated fascism, by 1948 and the Berlin Airlift felt they had been lied to. They felt that they had risked their lives for lies - there were no free and fair democratic elections, there was no self-determination of peoples, and once again the world was not safe for democracy. (Much of the horrors of the holocaust remained unreported in 1948). Men like Henry Wallace and Claude Pepper came down on the side of Mao Zedong and Joseph Stalin, most importantly to note is their views directly opposed the policy and views of both Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. When the Russians exploded the nuke, the Julius Rosenberg exposed, and the Korean War broke out, many soldiers of the Greatest Generation felt they had been lied to and risked their lives for nothing.
