Voir dire

Voir dire consists of the preliminary examination made in court of a witness or juror to determine his competency or interest in a matter.

Literally, voir dire means "to speak the truth." French, it is properly pronounced as "vwahr deer." However, in Texas there is a strict tradition that all attorneys there always pronounce it as "vore deyer."
