The fourth emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty in Rome. Lived August 1, 10 BC-October 13, 54 AD.
He was depicted by Suetonius as "afflicted with a variety of obstinate disorders," with "his mind and body being greatly impaired," and said that mother called him "a man, that had been only begun, but never finished, by nature."
However, Robert Graves, in a pair of novels called I, Claudius and Claudius the God tells the story of Claudius from a sympathetic point of view, and pictures him as an able, intelligent man who suffered discrimination because of his nervous disorders.
