Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth (29,028 feet).
Located in Nepal, on the Nepal- Tibet border, it is part of the Himalaya mountain range. It was first climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on May 29th, 1954. Although sometimes attributed to Hillary, the quotation on why he was climbing Everest, "Because it's there," was actually said by George Mallory, who, with his partner Andrew Irving, attempted Everest in 1924. They were unsuccessful in their attempt, and both died on the mountain. The first female to climb Everest was a Japanese climber named Junko Tabei. She summited on May 16th, 1975.
