The National Transportation Safety Board is a small governmental agency originally founded to investigate airplane crashes, but had that authority taken away from it in 1940.

The NTSB lacks any authority to regulate, fund, or be directly involved in the operation of any transportation system.

Beginning in 1996, the NTSB was assigned some responsibility to assist families of victims of airplane crashes.

Beginning in 2000, the NTSB began to plan the "NTSB Academy" at the Virginia campus of George Washington University Virginia campus was selected as the Academy's home. In August 2003 the NTSB began operating its facility there, and in 2006 changed its name to the NTSB Training Center.
