The New York Unified Court System consists of all the trial and appellate state courts in New York.[1]
The trial courts are called the New York Supreme Courts, contrary to the naming system used in most other states. The first level of appeals, which are appeals taken by right rather than permission, are to the New York Appellate Divisions, numbered one through four. The jurisdiction of each appellate division is separate and independent.[2]
The final appeals, which are by permission, are to the New York Court of Appeals.
