A campaign, often known by the British synonym "scheme" (a term which does not carry negative connotations), refers to a concerted effort to accumulate action or property towards a common goal. A school may hold a "campaign" to raise money to build a new building, for example.
More commonly, "campaign" refers to a political contest, such as the race for president.
