The denominator is the bottom number in a fraction by which the numerator is divided when converting to decimal form. In 2/3, the denominator is three. In 1/4, the denominator is four. The denominator is calculated when the fraction is in lowest terms, so the denominator of 4/8 is two, even though the digit 2 appears nowhere in the fraction.
