The Buckley rule states that support should be given to "the rightwardmost viable candidate". During the 2010 election, the Buckley rule was transformed into "the rightwardmost electable candidate".[1][2]
The Buckley rule is named after William F. Buckley, but was not heard about until the 2010 election. Some believe that the rule as it is known today using the word "electable" was actually invented by Karl Rove.[2]
