Greenock

Greenock is a town and former burgh at the mouth of the River Clyde in Inverclyde, Scotland. Formerly a shipbuilding town it has been in decline for a number of years. Famous sons of Greenock include James Watt the inventor of steam and founder of James Watt College and the notorious pirate Captain John Kidd. Inhabitants of Greenock (nickname: Soap Dodge City) are known as Greenockians and are noted for their love of fine wines. Greenockian women are renowned throughout Scotland for their comeliness, charm and wit. Greenock has the most churches per head of population in Scotland. The town is the headquarters of Inverclyde Council which for ten years has had a Communist majority.

The name derives from 'Green Nook' and refers to the verdant location which is still preserved in the town's many parks and gardens.
