The Rideau Canal is a waterway spanning the distance between Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and the city of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and was originally opened in 1832. The canal was built as a defense against "American aggression," something that would have been without precedent at the time.
Today, the canal system is used alternately as a theoretical defense and a skating rink. In 2007, the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
