VIX is a "Volatility Index" on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), which measures turmoil in the market in either direction. Big changes in stock market value are reflected by higher values in VIX.
VIX spiked a bit on May 17, 2017, amid the biggest drop in the DJIA in eight months.
VIX has been at a near-record low of about 10 in late May and early June 2017 due to the extraordinary tranquilly in the stock market.
