Free software includes software that doesn't cost people to use (freeware), as well as software that any developer may freely change and redistribute. The term "free software", however, is also frequently applied to crippled demo versions ("crippleware") of software such as system utilities masquerading as freeware. Many operating system cleanup programs such as registry cleaners are marketed in this misleading way.
