" i.e. " is an abbreviation for the Latin term id est, meaning "that is"—"that is [to say]", "in other words", i.e., _____ (clarification follows with alternate word or wording). The abbreviation is properly followed by a comma, though the comma is often omitted. Not to be confused with e.g..
