Anathema, is from the Greek word άνάθεμα anathema, from the Greek άνά ana up + τιθεμαι tithemai to set, to place, dedicate (to evil); a thing or person greatly abhorred, detested, cursed as utterly rejected, condemned, damned. It has both religious and secular meanings.
In religion an anathema is a curse pronounced by the authorized religious or ecclesiastical authority on anything or anyone that is found to be unacceptable, disapproved, rejected, or to be officially excommunicated.
The term is found in the Christian New Testament in Galatians 1:8-9.
