40 Days For Life
40 Days For Life is a pro-life campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion, per their three-point program: Prayer and Fasting, constant vigil, and community outreach. A biblically focused campaign, a vision to access God’s power and bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America.
The movement was founded by David Bereit in 2004 in Bryan/College Station, Texas (after Planned Parenthood opened an abortion facility in the area), the 40 Days for Life campaigns have proven very fruitful. Although the majority of the leadership is Catholic, it is not solely a Catholic organization, but is broadly ecumenical, working with Orthodox and Protestants for the pro-life cause.
Some of the blessings the group associates with the campaign (statistics are as of the end of the 2018 campaign and are based on information known to the organization):[1]
- 15,256 lives that have been spared from abortion
- 186 abortion workers have quit their jobs and walked away from the abortion industry (including Abby Johnson, former Planned Parenthood director of the Bryan/College Station facility; she left after witnessing for the first time an abortion being performed)
- 99 abortion facilities completely shut down following local 40 Days for Life campaigns (including, notably, the Bryan/College Station Planned Parenthood facility, which now houses 40 Days national headquarters).
With their humble beginnings , people of faith and conscience have since mobilized in 337 cities across all 50 of the United States, as well as numerous countries around the world.
