Lawrence Lader was born in 1919 to Jewish parents. In his early adulthood he was a supporter of Marxism. He, along with Betty Friedan, was one of the founders of the pro-abortion group NARAL. Betty Friedan described him as "the founding father of the abortion movement". He had a laboratory in his home to copy the French abortion pill RU-486.
