John Goddard (Dartmouth, MA, 1724 - Newport, RI, 1785) is a famous Newport, Rhode Island cabinetmaker of the 18th century. Goddard was widely recognized as one of early Americaâs most talented cabinet-makers and his creations were sought-after by the port cityâs most well-to-do merchants. [1]
An 18th century mahogany bureau table carved by Newportâs most celebrated cabinetmaker was sold for a stunning $5.7 million at Christieâs New York on 19 January 2011, placing it among the highest auction prices ever realized for an item of American furniture.[1]
