The silent e is a concept in phonics that addresses the effect an omitted "e" (due to adding an -ing or -ed ending) continues to have on a preceding vowel in a word, by making it a long rather than a short vowel. Examples are:[1]

  • rise + ing -> rising
  • bake + ing -> baking
  • hope + ed -> hoped
