A digraph consists of two consecutive letters that form one phonetic sound, also called a "phoneme".

Consonant diagraphs include:

  • ph
  • th

Vowel diagraphs include:

  • ar
  • ea
  • er
  • ie (e.g., "pie", but contrast "mien", pronounced meen)
  • ir
  • oa
  • oe
  • or
  • ue
  • ur
