Phonetic spelling takes advantage of the insights of phonics to correctly spell most words.

A helpful poem is this:

"i" before "e", except after "c", or when sounded as "ay", as in "neighbor" and "weigh". And "weird" is just "weird".

The rare exceptions

  • weird (as above)
  • neither
  • leisure
  • height
  • caffeine
  • foreign
  • heifer
  • forfeiture
  • the "cien" endings: ancient, efficient, sufficient, and conscience
