A gag order is an censorship of someone, typically a defendant in a legal proceeding, to prohibit him from speaking publicly against someone connected with the proceeding.
Gag orders are a form of a prior restraint which, in non-judicial contexts, are considered to be presumptively invalid under the First Amendment.
