Materials science is the study of the properties, structure, and manufacturing of various substances, including ceramics, plastics, polymers, wood, metals, and combinations (composites), typically for strength and durability.
Materials science is an interdisciplinary field, but would commonly be part of a mechanical engineering department. Civil and chemical engineering also contribute to or draw from materials science.
