A word's value in numeric terms is the sum of the numeric value of each of its letters, where:

  • a = 1
  • b = 2
  • c = 3

...

  • y = 25
  • z = 26

This can be helpful for encouraging an early reader who likes math to read more, and to increase his vocabulary.

Some fun examples are:

  • pouring has a word value of exactly 100.
  • impatiently has a high word value of 144 - a perfect square of 12
