Dunbartonshire, or the County of Dumbarton, is a county on the northern banks of the River Clyde in Scotland. It stretches from the Central Lowlands to the southern Scottish Highlands. Its county town and namesake is Dumbarton. Part of the built-up area of Glasgow, Scotland's most populous city, lies in Dunbartonshire, although the vast majority of that is in Lanarkshire to the south. By far, Dunbartonshire's most notable physical landmark is Loch Lomond, which forms part of the border with Stirlingshire.

Geography

Dunbartonshire is one of Scotland's smallest counties, ranking 29th out of 34 with an area of 241 sq mi. It borders Argyllshire to the west across Loch Long, with a short border with Perthshire to the north. To the east, across Loch Lomond and Endrick Water, is Stirlingshire, with Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire lying to the south, with the border with those counties bisecting the Glasgow urban area and the Firth of Clyde.
