Dathan, from the tribe of Reuben, was one of four rebels who schemed against the leadership of Moses and Aaron during the journey by the Israelites in the wilderness, as set forth Numbers 16.

Dathan's brother was Abiram and his father was Eliab. Dathan, with his brother and two others, led 250 Israelites against Moses, who was upset at the challenge to his authority.
