TASS was formerly the official news agency of the defunct Soviet Union. TASS originated as the St. Petersburg Telegraph Agency, which went live on September 1, 1904.
In Soviet times it was taken over by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet and given the name of TASS (Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union).
In 1992 TASS was rebranded the Information Telegraph Agency of Russia or ITAR-TASS. In 2014 it reverted to its former name as the Russian News Agency TASS.
