Treasury bonds (T-bonds) are long-term, fixed-interest debt securities issued by the U.S. government, typically with maturities of 20 or 30 years. Bonds were popular during the two world wars and early Cold War.

Since going off the gold standard in 1971, investors in government debt to finance the federal deficit much prefer shorter term T-bills as a hedge against inflation.
