Layoff

A layoff, although under union rules was once a mere temporary sending home of workers due to economic conditions, by the 21st century it has become the final termination of employment of many workers at a company or the federal government. The reason is typically due to financial difficulties or (other than the government) merely to increase profits. Workers laid off today are rarely called back to work in the future by the same company.
Many layoffs nationwide can be a sign of an economic downturn or recession.
