Benjamin (which means "son of my right hand") was the twelfth son of Jacob and second of Rachel, the wife who Jacob loved. She died after giving birth to him. Rachel at first called him Ben-Oni, which means "son of my trouble" before Jacob renamed him. His story is recorded in the Bible in the book of Genesis (Gen 35:16-18). His descendents were one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. In Jacob's deathbed blessing, he said of Benjamin:

"Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he devours his prey, in the evening he divides the plunder." (Gen 49:27)
