Sam Houston

Sam Houston was the first (and only) President of the Republic of Texas and the first Governor of the State of Texas. He was an accomplished general famous for roundly defeating the Mexican Army led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana at the Battle of San Jacinto.
