Sir Humphrey Davy

Sir Humphrey Davy was an English chemist who worked in the coal mines of that country, and discovered a number of elements. He was a famous for inventing the Davy safety lamp which allowed naked flames to be used in coal mines without the danger of explosion from fire-damp (methane).
