An empire is a dominion that spans a range of civilizations and cultures and is generally under the rule of a single monarch.
The first known empire was the Akkadian Empire under Sargon the Great, which lasted from 2350-2150 B.C. in Northwest Sumeria.
Another notable empire was the Roman Empire, which dominated the western world from 27 B.C. - 476 A.D.
